چکیده

This paper examines and quantifies the complex linkages between industrial activity, environmental regulations and air pollution in China. We utilize a little used dataset of Chinese industry specific emissions for a variety of pollutants between 1996 and 2003. Our analysis allows us to investigate the role played by different determinants of emissions intensity. We find pollution intensity to be a positive function of physical and human capital intensity. Conversely, we find pollution intensity to be a negative function of the productivity of an industry and the industry’s expenditure on capital and R&D. Our results also indicate that regulations, both formal and informal, have been successful in reducing the pollution intensity of Chinese industries. JEL Classification: O13, L60, Q21, Q25, Q28

Environmental regulations on air pollution in China and their impact on infant mortality.

This study explores the impact of environmental regulations in China on infant mortality. In 1998, the Chinese government imposed stringent air pollution regulations, in one of the first large-scale regulatory attempts in a developing country. We find that the infant mortality rate fell by 20 percent in the treatment cities designated as "Two Control Zones." The greatest reduction in mortality ...

Pollution Havens and Industrial Agglomeration

Pollution-intensive industries are generally characterized by imperfect competition, increasing returns to scale and large transportation costs. We investigate two countries, N and S, each with two sectors. Manufacturing generates cross-border pollution which reduces agricultural production. Firms can freely move across country borders, but not workers. First, we show that pollution lowers loca...

Developing an urban congestion pricing model by considering sustainability improvement and using a multi-objective optimization approach

This paper introduces a Travel Demand Management (TDM) model in order to decrease the transportation externalities by affecting on passengers’travel choices. Thus, a bi-objective bi-modal optimization model for road pricing is developed aiming to enhance environmental and social sustainability by considering to minimize the air pollution and maximize the social welfare as its objectives. This m...
